Rod Hunt's 2011 Illustration Round Up

We're already full steam ahead with 2012, so just time to have a quick recap on some of the fantastic illustration projects I had the pleasure of working on in 2011.

I worked with San Francisco based advertising agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners illustrating their new advertising campaign "Welcome to the World of Sex" for AIDES, the first French HIV/AIDS prevention non-profit organization. Their latest campaign aims to promote safe sex, awareness and behavioural changes through innovative and provocative imagery, taking a humorous & revealing approach to the world of human sexuality & safe sex.

I contributed illustrations to the DEFRA Natural Environment White Paper. DEFRA - The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is a government department in the UK. The Natural Environment White Paper is a bold and ambitious statement outlining the Government’s vision for the natural environment over the next 50 years, backed up with practical action to deliver that ambition.

Working with Fission Creative I provided the illustration for the redesign of Bettingjobs.com. Bettingjobs.com is the premier recruitment consultancy specialising in the online gaming and betting industry.

One of my favorite commissions of the year was illustrating the cover of Looking for Transwonderland - Travels in Nigeria, Noo Saro-Wiwa’s tongue-in-cheek Nigerian travel guide published by Granta Books. Noo Saro Wiwa, the daughter of the Nigerian writer and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, has written on Africa for both Lonely Planet and Rough Guide travel guides. Art Direction by Michael Salu.

Working with advertising agency VCCP I illustrated the summer advertising campaign for Southern Railway, imagining the rail network & many of the regions tourist attractions as a theme park. Can you find Loco Toledo, the campaigns Mexican Wrestler?

I had a the greatest pleasure to work with Top Gear again, producing an event map in the style of my Where's Stig? books to promote Top Gear Live this November at the Excel Centre London & NEC Birmingham.

With the 2012 Olympics almost upon us, I worked with Hat-trick Design, illustrating the presentation pack for the Royal Mail's final set of 10 stamps for London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, covering all the sports featured in the set. The stamp collection & presentation pack can be purchased here

The was also a new miniature Where's Stig?: Glovebox Edition of my No.1 bestselling book for Top Gear in September. Magnifying glasses at the ready!

2011 was also a hugely successful year with Illustration Awards, with accolades from American Illustration 30, Communication Arts 54, 3x3 Annual No.8, Bronze award from Images 35 - Best of British Illustration (Paddy Clarke Ha Ha HAa book cover), Silver Medal from the New York Society of Illustrators 53 (AIDES Campaign) & a Silver Clio Award (AIDES Campaign).

Images is the UK's leading illustration competition, annual, awards show, and touring exhibition dedicated to showcasing the very best in new British illustration. It is unique in that it is Britain's only jury-selected illustration competition, judged by a highly regarded panel of industry experts.

Looking for Transwonderland selected for Society of Illustrators 54th Annual & Exhibition

I've just heard that my book cover illustration for Looking For Transwonderland, the new novel by Noo Saro-Wiwa, has also been selected for at the New York Society of Illustrators 54th annual competition & exhibition, to go along with the Silver Medal for my AIDES advertising campaign. Very pleased to have two pieces selected.

Works selected by the juries will be shown at the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators, 128 East 63rd Street, New York from January 4 to March 17, 2012. The entire show will be presented in full color in Illustrators 54, "America's Original Annual of Illustration." A selection of 40 works will tour US colleges through June 2013, the 31st educational traveling exhibition.

Just received my preview copy of Looking for Transwonderland - Adventures in Nigeria, the new novel by Noo Saro-Wiwa. I did the cover illustration & I'm very pleased with the results. One of my favorite commissions of the year!

Noo Saro-Wiwa was brought up in England, but every summer she was dragged back to Nigeria - a country she viewed as an annoying parallel universe where she had to relinquish all her creature comforts and sense of individuality. Then her father, activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, was murdered there, and she didn't return for 10 years. Recently, she decided to rediscover and come to terms with the country her father loved. She travelled from the exuberant chaos of Lagos to the calm beauty of the eastern mountains; from the eccentricity of a Nigerian dog show to the empty Transwonderland Amusement Park - Nigeria's decrepit and deserted answer to Disneyland. She explored Nigerian christianity, delved into its history of slavery, examined the corrupting effect of oil, investigated Nollywood. She found the country as exasperating as ever, and frequently despaired at the corruption and inefficiency she encountered. But she also discovered that it was far more beautiful and varied than she had ever imagined, and was seduced by its thick tropical rainforest and ancient palaces and monuments. Most engagingly of all she introduces us to the people she meets, and gives us hilarious insights into the Nigerian character, its passion, wit and ingenuity.

Today Royal Mail has launched the final set of 10 stamps for London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, one year to the day from the start of the games. Working with Hat-trick Design, Rod Hunt illustrated the presentation pack for the new stamps, covering all the sports featured in the set. The stamps feature some lovely work by all the illustrators involved. The stamp collection & presentation pack can be purchased here

I'm taking part in a panel discussion "The Secrets To Success" for Digital Arts magazine at New Designers show in Islington on Friday 8th July.

Four of the UK's leading illustrators engage in a lively, opinionated discussion on the steps graduates should take to move from university days to a rewarding career as a professional illustrator. Illustrators who will be debating the finer points of how to get on the right career path are Rod Hunt, Mr Bingo, Lizzie Mary Cullen and Tigz Rice.

Each of the illustrators will give a short talk on how their career has progressed from graduation to where they are today - revealing how a mix of talent, self-promotion and a bit of luck has helped them to creative and professional success. Digital Arts editor Neil Bennett will also give some tips on how to get the attention of magazines and other curated creative publications.

These talks will be followed up by a panel discussion based around a series of questions that are on every graduate's mind: from 'How do I make some/more/any money?' and 'Do I need to up sticks to London?' to 'Can I work for big clients without selling my soul?' and 'How do I stop myself from telling clients to £$%* off?'.

We'll then throw the discussion opens to questions from the audience to find out exactly what you want to know.

The panel discussion is at 4pm on Friday July 8th, and is free to attend if you have a ticket to New Designers - though we advise booking in advance here in case it's oversubscribed.

Now in its 52nd year, this prestigious competition selected 181 winning projects from 4,055 entries submitted from around the world, so a pretty tough competition!

Working with long-term investment and land partner Emafyl Properties, SFSA is two years into a five-year project to develop 120,000sqft of vacant warehouse space on Mellish Industrial Estate in South East London. When complete the project will comprise 300 studio units and workshops, an art education centre, fine art print studio, jewellery studio, ceramic studio and a 3500sqft gallery space. SFSA is a London-based social enterprise company supporting the development of visual and fine art practice, craft and design. Through its provision of affordable studio space it is creating a new kind of arts community in London. Selected for American Illustration 30 competition with AIDES Welcome to the World of Sex ad campaign

My "Welcome to the World of Sex" ad campaign for AIDES, the first French HIV/AIDS prevention non-profit organization, has been selected for the prestigious American Illustration 30 annual. It's a tough competition, so I'm very pleased to have work selected for the second year running.

From more than 7,000 pictures entered by over 1,100 illustrators, magazines, agencies, publishers and schools, the jury selected, by a majority vote or better, only 316 images to appear in the book and represent the best pictures from 2010. AI30 will be printed in full color and distributed worldwide in hardcover immediately after The Party, November 10, 2011 - our annual book launch event that brings the creative community together to celebrate the winners. The Party will again be part of Illustration Week in New York City.

The second of the three-part “Annual Exhibition: Illustrators 53,” the Book and Editorial Exhibit will be held at the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators January 26 to February 19, 2011. It featured works by leading contemporary illustrators worldwide, selected by a prestigious jury of professionals.

The Book category consists of illustrations used inside or for covers of books, including hardback and paperback books, children’s books and young adult literature, and single-image comic book art. This year, 72 images were selected from 641 submissions in this category.

Is that 2010 done with already? Here are some of the highlights of what was another busy year working on some great projects.

I started the year doing a major update for my Chessington World of Adventures theme park visitors map for the 2010 season, including the major new Wild Asia attraction.

April saw the launch of an interactive water saving house project for French water company Lyonnaise des Eaux

After a solid six months work my newest book Where's Stig? The World Tour, the sequel to my 2009 bestseller Where's Stig? for the BBC's Top Gear TV show, hit the shelves in September.

Also out in September was my cover for the Vintage reissue of Roddy Doyle's Booker Prize winning book Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha for Random House.

The autumn saw me work on the new Whitbread website, with core illustrations throughout by Rod Hunt. Working with design company Tonic I produced three versions of the Whitbread cityscape, & the scene changes through the day from morning, lunchtime & to night time

Finally, the end of December saw the launch of my first Apple iPhone & iPad game app, an adaptation of my first Where's Stig? book.

This month I'm opening my studio over 3 days as part of Second Floor Studios & Arts Open Studios in SE LONDON. Location – Second Floor Studios & Arts, Mellish Industrial Estate, Harrington Way (off Warspite Rd), Woolwich, London SE18 5NR

Second Floor Studios & Arts, one of the largest communities of artists in the UK, will open its doors to the public on November 18, 20 and 21 for a special Open Studio.

The Open Studio at Second Floor Studios & Arts (SFSA), based on the Thames in South East London, will showcase works from more than 100 artists, many leaders in their field and all acclaimed visual and fine arts professionals.

Among the 100 artists opening their studios are painters, sculptors, print-makers, photographers, graphic and digital designers, animators, illustrators, fashion and jewellery designers, mosaic experts, wood and glass specialists, and interactive sound installation artists. Much of the work on display will be seen for the first time, and visitors will get the chance to view the artists at work and watch as art is created.

Commenting on the Open Studio, SFSA Project Director Matthew Wood said: “The Open Studio is a rare chance to see professional artists at work, to meet with them, ask them about their inspiration, techniques and work. To get up close and personal with art and artists of this calibre is a special experience and we are thrilled that our 100-strong artist community will be able to share their work with the public this November.”

Since 1997 SFSA has offered affordable studio space to arts professionals, creating a community of artists that has grown year on year. The not-for-profit project is undertaking a major strategic growth and development plan across its Woolwich site. Working in partnership with Emafyl Properties, SFSA will deliver studio space for up to 300 artists, an education centre and outreach programmes, open access print studios and a 3000sq.ft gallery, creating one of Europe’s largest centres of affordable studio space for artists, craft-makers and designers.

The SFSA Open Studio will be open to viewings on the evening of Thursday 18 November (5pm until 9pm) and from 11am until 6pm on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 November 2010. Selected works will be available to buy direct from the artist.

The AOI's Images is the premier and longest running jury-selected illustration annual and touring exhibition in the UK. It provides the leading showcase for the huge variety of contemporary illustration commissioned in the UK today, published alongside self initiated promotional artwork and up-and-coming new talent.

On display are a selection of 220 artworks showcasing incredible talents of illustrators who have made a significant contribution to their industry over the last year, including artwork from the educational BBC Primary History website, delightfully illustrated by Frances Castle. AOI chairman Rod Hunt provides intricate imagery for the highly successful “Top Gear - Where's Stig?” book, and displayed alongside an intriguingly illustrated spread by David Hughes for his book “Walking The Dog” are striking editorial pieces by Noma Bar and Artbombers, as well as the top young illustration talent of the future published in the New Talent category. In addition to the original artwork, the illustrations will also be showcased in their applied form – published copies, packaging, animations etc – to present the many uses of illustration today.

The exhibited work provides an overview of the illustrations that were selected by an expert panel of internationally acclaimed judges, including Matt Small – Client Service Director at Pearlfisher; Graham Wood – Head of Art JWT; Nol Davis – Head of Creative Services Channel 5 and illustrator Andrew Rae.

Award winners will be announced by John Mulholland, Editor of The Observer at the Awards Night on Tuesday 7th September 2010 (strictly by invite only), with guests enjoying Honey Dew beer from sponsors Fuller’s.

Where's Stig? The World Tour - Every now and then, Top Gear’s tame racing driver needs a change of scene, and after a power-lap-packed year that’s seen our fearless man in white elevated to bone fide celebrity status, Stig’s decided he needs to escape the flashing bulbs of the paparazzi and do something for himself. I attended ICON6 The Illustration Conference in LA last month. It was a great event with a top line up of speakers including Peter Arkle, Gary Taxali, Yuko Shimizu, Wayne White, Arem Duplessis (The New York Times Magazine) & Christoph Niemann. I also gave a lecture session Euro Smash - Illustration Across The Pond, where I talked about the illustration industry in the UK & Europe.

I have two projects, Change The World 9 To 5 & The Lightbox Interactive Installation featured in the new book For A Good Cause published by Index Books.

Many large NGOs invest money in design for ad campaigns but there are people who do not understand how they can spend money on something like advertising. However, does anyone really think that letting the world know that people are still dying of hunger or thirst is not worth the investment? This book is a collection of the best socially conscious design. The original idea was to limit the book to pro bono projects, but later we decided to expand the concept to any design done with a good cause in mind. The projects featured were created to show that it is indeed possible to make a better, more beautiful world.

I'm pleased to announce that my piece Where's Stig? Tokyo has been selected for the prestigious American Illustration 29 annual.

From an impressive 8,033 pictures entered by over 1,200 illustrators, magazines, agencies and publishers, the jury selected only 388 images by a majority vote or better to appear in the book and represent the best images from 2009. AI29 will be printed in full color and distributed world-wide in hard-cover immediately after The Party, November 11, 2010, again as part of Illustration Week in New York City.
